America’s Getting the Bollywood Itch

There’s no denying that Bollywood is continuing to move into Hollywood. Movies have been available, mostly in straight-to-video format in the U.S. for years, but Bollywood influences are sneaking on to the small screen, as well. Americans are big fans of reality competition television shows, such as “American Idol”, “Dancing with the Stars”, and “So You Think You Can Dance.” In fact, “So You Think You Can Dance” (SYTYCD) has already featured two Bollywood-influenced dances in their competition this summer! The bright colors, the novelty, the upbeat tempos, and the joyous spirit of the dances are grabbing American television viewers’ attentions. It’s also rumored that the first big screen version of High School Musical, HSM3, will feature a Bollywood-inspired dance number. If Disney’s embracing it, it can’t be long before Bollywood-inspired exercise routines are burning up American gyms, a Bollywood animated flick and/or cartoon (along with all of the merchandising that comes with it!), and a Bollywood sitcom hits mainstream American television. No, seriously! It’s good news, though. Increased interest in Bollywood will lead to increased interest in Indian tourism, leads to increased wages and benefits and a better overall quality of life for Indian’s hardworking citizens. Stay tuned!
